Saica Flex, the flexible packaging division of Saica Group, has invested €7.1 million (£5.9 million) in new machinery at its Wigan site. The investment is set to enhance production capabilities and support the division’s growth in the flexible packaging market.

The technology includes a “state-of-the-art” Windmöller & Hölscher printing press, advanced conversion equipment, and specialised systems such as perforation units, a high-speed slitting machine, and a hole-punching system. These upgrades streamline operations and drive innovation, ensuring Saica Flex remains at the forefront of the sector, the company stated.

A key focus of the new technology is the production of Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), which extends the shelf life of perishable products like sliced onions, diced fruit, and cut vegetables. This packaging solution increases the shelf life of these items from just a few hours to as long as six days, benefiting both producers and consumers, Saica Flex explained.

In addition to technological advancements, the company said the investment will have a positive impact on the local economy – creating 11 new jobs, with plans to add up to 20 more positions in Wigan.

“This investment represents a significant leap forward for Saica Flex,” said Susana Alejandro, president and CEO of Saica Group. “Not only does it enhance our manufacturing capabilities, but it also demonstrates our dedication to the Wigan community. We’re thrilled to create new job opportunities and meet growing customer demands while continuing to lead in innovation and sustainability.”
