Self-adhesive label, packaging, and commercial print provider Achertäler Druckerei has installed a customised Chrome RSI 440 label slitter/rewinder from Rotocon Europe for inspecting and finishing self-adhesive labels for the wine, spirits, and food industries.

The Chrome RSI features front inspection with an integrated splice table, reaching speeds of 300m/min, and automatic slitting connected to Achertäler’s Cerm MIS Software. The company requested that the Chrome RSI be ‘mirrored’ to create a virtual twin of the machine’s performance to access and analyse output data 24/7. The machine also features a waste rewinder that can be lowered into the machine frame, as well as large deflection rollers; two web controls; a new automatic knife positioning system; and a high-speed inspection system from BST.

Frank Neumann, Achertäler Druckerei managing director and owner, said the search for a new slitter rewinder began in 2023. Following an ‘intensive’ search, the company chose Rotocon after testing a similar slitter/rewinder at a partner’s demo centre near Milan in mid-2023.

He added that a noteworthy reason behind the final decision was Rotocon’s willingness to build a unique solution; putting the guiding web on the left-hand side of the machine, as well as integrating the machine into the ERP system, allowing the knives to automatically adjust to the web widths of the orders. With the investment, the company has taken an important step forward in the automation of the production process, he concluded.
