Industry association Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE) says its members have ‘cautious optimism’ about the future, forecasting moderate growth for 2024, following its annual summer conference in June, this time in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The FPE represents the interests of more than 80 small and medium-sized companies, and multinational manufacturers. According to the association, the member companies account for more than 85% of European sales of flexible packaging made of different materials, mainly plastics, aluminium, and paper.
The Copenhagen meeting provided a platform for the exchange of information which included an update on developments in the North American market, presented by the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA). Growth forecasts were based on members’ own estimates for order development, with optimism based largely on assumed improvement from a difficult 2023.
A key topic of the conference was the upcoming implementation of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – an area the members are preparing to fulfil the new requirements for while ensuring competitiveness at the same time.
‘We are proud of the strong commitment and strong support of our member companies in the association to the benefit of the entire sector,’ said Jakob Mosser, chairman of the FPE. ‘Together, we will master the challenges ahead and continue to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for flexible packaging.’
Mr Mosser described the association’s sustainability, market observation, public affairs, regulatory affairs and communication achievements as ‘outstanding’. He added that these achievements not only respond to regulatory requirements, but also provide insights to shape the future of the industry.
