Cheltenham-based Modern Packaging was established 20 years ago by Tom, Bernie and Linda Woods. With lifelong experience in the package, print and converting industry, they have over the years steadily expanded the premises to include four flexo presses and work hard in producing high quality designs for blue chip companies. The Woods pride themselves in their ability not only in providing superior quality, but in serving their customers changing needs with short lead times and fast response times when the inevitable emergencies arise.
In 2011, the company expanded further with a company acquisition in Pershore, in Worcestershire, which gave extra print and conversion capacity and room for future expansion. This planned expansion has now been executed with the purchase of an eight colour Flexotecnica EvoXD gearless flexo press for high quality, quick changeover printing of short run orders.
The company’s focus today is on high quality packaging for a wide range of products, including bakery products, cooked and uncooked meats, salads and fresh produce, confectionery, pet foods, hardware and pharmaceuticals for multi-national and blue chip customers. With the new press soon to be installed, the achievable quality will be taken to the next level with high definition results to give a value added products to its valued clientele.
Modern Packaging has chosen Flexotecnica Srl of Tavazzano, Italy, to supply its next flexo press as it launches into high definition printing. The press will be installed during December 2012 and go into full production immediately in the new year 2013.
The EvoXD has eight colours around the CI drum featuring print and anilox sleeve technology, gearless servo drive system and Flexotecnica’s Automated Impression setting system technology, AIF, which sets the print and anilox sleeves into print position without operator intervention in around 24 metres. This combined with an Eltromat video web inspection system featuring Regi-Touch can give a total impression and register set up in under 100 metres.
The gearless press has been developed with the latest eco friendly servo motors, communication solutions and operator friendliness. It meets the demands of flexo printers to produce with more efficiency and higher printing quality.
The press specification for Modern Packaging includes turret winders for automatic splicing, quick release doctor blade chambers, edge guides before printing and rewinding, inking and Speedy Clean auto wash-up system supplied together with an automatic viscosity control system. The press also has an extended bridge drying tunnel to give a maximum production speed of 500 m/min, maximum web width of 850 mm and a maximum print repeat of 850 mm which ideally suits the company’s short and medium run work.
The management of the print process is controlled by an FNC-3000 control system, which allows you to enter and store all printing parameters and be recalled on repetitive order runs.
With this investment Modern Packaging keeps to its strategic ideals of pursuing new technology in flexographic printing and launches its new concept for high definition flexography.
