Bobst has shown its commitment to training in the UK by renewing its engineering apprenticeship programme.
The programme is designed to produce qualified engineers able to work on the wide range of equipment used by packaging manufacturers and converters. It consists of a one year foundation course at an engineering college followed by three to four years of on the job training.
John Stelmasiak has completed his apprenticeship, achieving a level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering. John’s apprenticeship included eight weeks of intensive training at the company’s production facility in Shanghai, China during 2011. Alan Letford, national service manager, said, ‘We’re delighted that John has completed his apprenticeship and now joins our team of 25 field service technicians serving customers throughout the UK and Ireland. He has worked through his programme with commitment and enthusiasm and has changed a lot from the quiet teenager we took on four years ago.’

Replacing John in the apprentice programme is 18 year old Lewis Hill, who has completed the college element of his training and is now undergoing on the job training under the watchful eye of experienced technicians. During his training, Lewis will continue to attend college one day a week to study for an HNC in Mechanical Engineering. Mr Letford said, ‘We have services centers in 11 countries as well as production sites spread over three continents. Each of these need well trained, passionate engineers if we are to continue to offer the levels of service and innovation our customers want. Worldwide it means training hundreds of apprentices at any one time and John and Lewis represent our contribution to that. Taking on apprentices, along with recruiting additional experienced engineers, means that we can continue to work towards becoming a benchmark services provider to our industry.’
