Cost concerns in danger of cutting off ink supplies

Moira McMillan, CEO of the British Coatings Federation (BCF), talks to FlexoTech about an imminent and very serious potential threat to the ink supplies of UK printer.

If the printing industry has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so, then ink may be the unsung hero of this print revolution. The demands of end users have become increasingly complex, with companies looking for eye-catching printed literature that stands out from the crowd or packaging that can withstand extremes of treatment such as food containers that can be microwaved and still retain their good looks. Every organisation involved in the printing process has an important part to play but often it is the technical know how of the ink producer that makes the end product work.

The high levels of customer service offered by ink companies, often at no extra charge, are now almost taken for granted by customers. This is putting significant financial pressures on ink producers, to the extent that unless something is done to redress the imbalance, it is possible that the UK ink manufacturing industry could see the closure of local plants within the next few years.
