A Uteco Onyx 808GL press is due to be installed this spring at TCL Packaging

To cope with increased demand for its packaging films, TCL Packaging has contracted to a new manufacturing facility in Telford. The company will move during the first half of 2014 to a new site, which will provide 70,000 square feet of manufacturing area, representing 2.5 times the current capacity.

A new Uteco Onyx 808GL central impression flexographic printing press is due to be installed this spring. At an investment of nearly £1.5 million, the press provides the very latest print technology required to meet increased demand for TCL’s printed packaging films and is the second new press purchased in three years.

Increased production efficiencies will be achieved by the press through inline slitting of large diameter film reels removing the need for post processing. It has an extended drying tunnel for faster speeds, shorter downtimes and automatic adjustment of impression pressure to eradicate print errors and minimise film waste.

The machine will be the first of its kind supplied to a specification developed between the two companies. Markus Jarvstrom, technical director of TCL Packaging, explained, ‘From the beginning, we specified a video inspection system that would deliver an increased resolution image of the print on a larger screen. This displays a finer level of detail on line and full web width visibility for maximising quality.

‘We also required a drive system able to offer independent, even rotation of the plate sleeve drive motors to give optimum dot quality and a sharper impression. The final specification meets all our requirements perfectly.’

TCL has enjoyed year-on-year, double digit sales growth for the last few years despite the economic recession. The company cites technical service and high definition print quality as its two main factors for success.
