Digital origination and flexographic platemaking specialist Brownett Ltd has invested in GMG OpenColor software to streamline its profile creation process.
The investment has improved colour accuracy leading to a reduction in job turnaround time and costs.
The company offers the complete repro service to its customers from design concept and proofing all the way through to final printing plates.
The increased use of spot colours in labels and packaging and the wide range of print processes and substrates in use create huge challenges for everyone in the packaging supply chain. Brand owners expect tight colour tolerances and reliable results for their brand colours, which require a good understanding of overprinting.
Since the company installed the software it offers to set up its customers press profiles for each job. Managing director Mark Brownett said, ‘We needed to improve the way we were creating profiles and processing jobs, not only to increase colour quality and consistency but also reduce the time it was taking to set up and produce accurate proofs.’
The software’s spectral prediction model incorporates the printing technology used, media type and ink sequence into the profile calculation. This delivers the most accurate results without expensive press tests.
The company has also invested in ProofControl software to help detect any anomalies that may occur on the proof printer early on. ProofControl guarantees reliable and complete quality control of digital colour proofs based on a defined standard such as Fogra 39L but also offers the flexibility for users to customise criteria.
Investing in OpenColor has enabled Brownett to operate with greater efficiency, reducing the time taken to produce each job. ‘Using OpenColor has simplified the whole process for us which has resulted in a massive reduction in time for us – as much as 50-75% – and this has led to a reduction in our overall costs,’ said Mr Brownett. ‘OpenColor has also enabled us to increase our service offering because it is quicker and easier for us to produce unique job profiles for all our clients, something we couldn’t possibly have done before.’
